Focus - Christ: The Righteousness of God | Part 3
Ministered by Jermaine Johnson

Christ is the only true standard of righteousness in the earth. Sin is destructive in nature and corrupts the heart of every man, making it impossible for mankind to stand righteous before God. All our efforts/pursuits outside of God's standard fall short and are ultimately futile. Christ therefore calls us to live according to His divine standard, by aligning ourselves to His will, rather than relying on our own understanding, preferences, or human effort. By this, we will experience true success in every season of our lives.

According to Romans 5:5–11, Jesus died for us while we were still sinners (His enemies, rightfully deserving His wrath) and living ignorantly. However, the day we believed in Him with all our hearts, we were justified, brought into fellowship with Him, which can save us from His wrath. This experience ought to produce a deep joy and genuine appreciation within us, as we can truly confess Him as Lord (Romans 10:9).

Sadly, despite His love, many people still attempt to establish their own righteousness by living according to personal standards and feelings (_Romans 10:3_). When this is done, they cannot perceive or embrace truth and will often justify
wrongdoing. As Christians however, we must always remember that righteousness is our identity.

Jesus was made to be sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corithians 5:21). Having been made righteous, we are therefore expected to live it out daily by our faith (i e. a continual obedience and dependence on the Holy Spirit). Sin is a choice, and should we sin, the Holy Spirit will convict us. We must then repent immediately, recognizing how precious our fellowship with Him is and the hope for restoration He offers.

Romans 12:1 implores us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. As we pursue righteousness, rejection or persecution will come, but we must remain hungry and thirsty for it (Matthew 5:6). The world may oppose us, but our identity in Christ empowers us to stand firm.

At the same time, we must guard our hearts against any pride, greed, lust, unforgiveness, and prayerlessness, all of which will hinder our walk with God. Jesus declared that we were chosen to bear fruit and commanded us to love one another, even when the world hates us. As Jesus confessed in John 5:30 that He could do nothing of Himself, we too are utterly dependent on God, and must stay connected to Him through prayer and His Word; refusing to seek ungodly alternatives in times of desperation.

Therefore, let us live each day, completely surrendered unto Christ, believing that His righteousness is both a precious gift and a great responsibility.
