Focus: Christ, The Righteousness of God (Part 5)
Ministered by Romario A. Mitchell
The righteousness of God, which is His holy, fair and just judgment, is the nature of Christ, the title Jesus was given and identified by. Christ is the only one that pleases God. Considering this, for us to have fellowship with God, we must be made as righteous as Christ. There is no other way.
Mankind’s original purpose is to have fellowship with Him, hence before the fall, they experienced same - fearing Him, walking in all His ways, loving and serving Him wholeheartedly (Deuteronomy 10:12). These are the same characteristics of a true worshipper; one who worships God in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24). However, because Adam sinned, all mankind became separated from this beautiful reality and were rendered incapable of pleasing God (Romans 5:19, 7:5).
Being outside of fellowship, no “good” thing we do is considered righteous in God’s eyes. Until we embrace His righteousness, any effort to forge our own way to winning God’s heart is futile. The only avenue He has provided is through repentance. We must accept the truth that we are filthy in sin, confess our need for Christ’s righteousness and call upon Him to be saved (Romans 10:9).
When He saves us, He places us in Christ and gives us everything we need to satisfy His purpose for our life. Being “in Christ” means we are made acceptable to God and placed in a right relationship with Him. It comes by being anointed by Him, ie filled with His Holy Spirit, so we can be declared His sons, like Jesus, having power of the works of the enemy.
Therefore, we too become Christ on the earth - “Christ-ians” - having the very image of Christ and walking in His righteousness. Being made righteous, we must continue inside our new reality, walking with the Holy Spirit daily by consistently trusting and obeying God’s word in all life decisions. Though foolish and deadly, it is possible to willingly put down His righteousness and take up our own way, which is unrighteousness.
Some of these unrighteous ways include:
- Viewing ourselves through the lens of our ungodly experiences and failures as born-again believers. This leads to self-condemnation, shame and depression.
- Choosing to hold on to sinful preferences, tendencies and desires instead of submitting them to God. This is pride that will cause God to resist us (James 4:6-7).
- Being a respecter of persons
- Not listening to wise counsel
- Prayerlessness
- Willful ignorance and a lack of meditation on the Word
Let us not be found at any time living outside of God’s righteousness but rather embrace it faithfully to the end. Our eternal salvation depends on it.
