Focus: Dealing with Offences and Unforgiveness
Ministered by Tashema Drummond
An offense is a stumbling block that can cause us to sin and unforgiveness is the battle to keep hurt, disappointment, and pain alive.
Whatever was done or said to you, any altercation or offense that comes your way, when you take on the offense and make a decision to remain in unforgiveness, you keep all of these negatives alive in your heart and have decided to keep your own wounds open. It is like having cuts and sores that are left unattended and barred from anything that can heal them.
The root of unforgiveness is bitterness and it stops the flow of love.
Bitterness is what grows from what the fleshly mind and emotions interpret as an offense. Here you are embracing what you feel rather than what God says about the situation, which is the mind of Christ.
Bitterness leads to pride and pride leads to self righteousness, which ultimately leads to spiritual stagnation. Pride keeps you from doing what is righteous. When pride and self righteousness take root, God will not reward you with forgiveness or deliverance, because your heart is resisting His instructions.
God requires us to walk in love, so if we are walking in unforgiveness, this suppresses the character of God that should be evident in our lives and it prevents love from flowing from us to others.
You have to desire reconciliation with your brother or sister. Reconciliation reflects God’s heart and His desire for unity among His people.
What must be clearly understood is that we will not be able to hear clearly from God or reap the rewards that come from walking in His Spirit if we hold on to unforgiveness.
One life-changing truth that we must embrace is that it is never about only focusing on the offender or the offensive situation that we encounter, it is about what God wants from us and what He wants to change in us. Victory comes when we realise that our deliverance is based on obeying the Word of God, not on someone agreeing with us, or coming to us with an apology. It is not even about someone forgiving us. The power of God’s Word is able to break every chain of offense, unforgiveness and bitterness.
Some forms of opposition that hinders us from walking in freedom are our expectations of people, our own negative feelings, and the voices we adhere to that are NOT in agreement with what is righteous or with what the Word of God says.
We walk in deliverance when we deny ourselves, obey to the Word of God, and remain connected to Him. As we choose forgiveness over offenses and obedience over selfish feelings, God is able to bring healing, freedom, and true deliverance to us. Thank God that in Jesus we are completely set free from ALL offenses and unforgiveness. Let us abide in Him and walk in love. Love is truly the more excellent way.
